Funke Akindele Bello has since her arrest, arraignment and sentencing spoken for the first time. She did this in a video on her Instagram page, where she thanked everyone, well wishers for the calls since she has been serving her punishment. The actress said the last few weeks after her arrest and trial for disobeying the lockdown order issued by the government has been a learning curve for her and she has learnt a lot.

Funke Akindele and her Husband Jjc Skillz were tried and fined for disobeying the lock down and social distancing order for the corona virus by hosting a party of more than 20 people. The party was for her husband’s birthday and it had in attendance a host of other celebrities which included singer Naira Marley and actress Eniola Badmus. In an almost two hour video shared via her Instagram page on Sunday April 19, 2020, the actress thanked everyone for the support so far.

“Thank you for all the love, support, feedbacks and calls, I really appreciate. These past few weeks has been a learning curve but we must keep moving forward………… My dear friends, corona virus is real. We all must continue to collaborate with the Lagos state government and the federal government by staying at home”

She encouraged people to obey the government’s orders, practice social distancing and good hygiene. She also appreciated the health workers who have been on the front line since the virus became an emergency and paid condolences to the people who have lost families during this pandemic. Recall that Funke Akindele and JJC skillz on Saturday, April 4 hosted a party at their house which sparked a Twitter backlash the following day. The party was to celebrate Skillz’s birthday. On Monday they were arrested and tried and the couple were fined 100, 000 naira each, with 14 days of community service.

Controversial singer Naira Marley was later arrested for attending the same party. He turned himself in but pleaded “not guilty” in court. He was later released on no charges or counts.

It is a fact that the same reason Funke Akindele and her husband were arrested for, was the same thing that happened at the funeral of the Chief of staff, Abba Kyari. The social distancing order was flouted as there were a lot of people in attendance, some without masks all packed themselves together, obviously more than 20, more than 50, people in attendance. In George Orwel’s l “Animal Farm”, there’s a common phrase that is always used, “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others”. The laws are made for the masses, not for aristocrats. What is the purpose of “equality before the law”? That is a question we should always ask ourselves. Nonetheless, let us continue adhering to the orders regarding this pandemic, as Funke has said, let us maintain at least two meters between people, wash our hands all the time, eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, in short practice good hygiene, etc.

May God, heal the world of  Covid – 19. May our lives be restored! Amen.
